Accessing the National Genomic Test Directory
The most up-to-date version of the National Genomic Test Directory is available through NHS England.
As part of the April 2026 update, genomic tests relating to haematological malignancies and central nervous system (CNS) cancers were restructured to support a transition to a digital NGTD in the future.
This development aims to make it easier for healthcare professionals to identify and request the most appropriate genomic tests.

Updating the National Genomic Test Directory
Applications to amend the test directory are welcomed from all stakeholders. Proposals may include new genomic targets, additional clinical indications, or revisions to existing tests.
Each submission is assessed against a range of criteria, including clinical benefit, patient need and supporting evidence demonstrating clinical utility. Reviews are undertaken by clinical and scientific specialists alongside patient and public representatives, ensuring patient perspectives are incorporated into decision-making.

Updating gene panel content
Genomics England's PanelApp serves as the primary knowledge resource for gathering and reviewing evidence linking genes with specific diseases across the Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) and other genomic initiatives. GMS panels can be recognised by their clinical indication (R code) and the blue banner displayed on the panel page.
Registered expert reviewers can contribute evidence relating to gene-disease associations and recommend the inclusion of additional genes within existing panels. Proposed updates to GMS panels are assessed through the genomic test evaluation process and are only implemented following approval through NHS England governance procedures.
