Research provides the opportunity to broaden our understanding about diseases caused by changes in a single gene or more complex diseases. Fundamental to genomic approach is the ambition to improve the health of individuals affected by inherited conditions, employ effective prevention strategies, and explore new ways of treating cancer and rare conditions.
The application of genomics will aim to make precise diagnoses more quickly resulting in improved outcomes and identify individuals where specific effective treatments may be appropriate based on a genetic result. Many of the tools being used today routinely in the NHS were originally developed for research programmes.
These are being discussed by the research committee so that we can focus our efforts on the needs of the population in the Northwest. We are particularly interested in expanding our genomic research into areas which have previously been underserved.
An example of this is our support and engagement with the Genes and Health study, which is undertaking genomic research with the British Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities to improve health outcomes especially for diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

The GMSA research committee has members from across the whole of the Northwest representing a range of clinical specialties including cancer, cardiology, mental health, primary care, and infectious diseases.
