We currently offer a comprehensive calendar of genomics education and training resources, including working alongside HEE regionally and nationally, and their GEP to ensure continuity of content and approach to delivery.  A full list of forthcoming education and training sessions can be viewed within the Events page on this site, searching ‘Education’.

Education and training programmes developed for healthcare professionals across multiple areas of practice; doctors, nurses, midwives, and pharmacists, including elements of self-assessment against competencies

We support directed learning and signposting to new and existing educational and training resources; by working in collaboration with key partners, we avoid duplication of work and conflicting messages. Directed learning and signposting to relevant educational and training resources.

Research provides the opportunity to broaden our understanding about diseases caused by changes in a single gene or more complex diseases. Fundamental to genomic approach is the ambition to improve the health of individuals affected by inherited conditions, employ effective prevention strategies, and explore new ways of treating cancer and rare conditions.

The application of genomics will aim to make precise diagnoses more quickly resulting in improved outcomes and identify individuals where specific effective treatments may be appropriate based on a genetic result.  Many of the tools being used today routinely in the NHS were originally developed for research programmes.

These are being discussed by the research committee so that we can focus our efforts on the needs of the population in the Northwest. We are particularly interested in expanding our genomic research into areas which have previously been underserved.

An example of this is our support and engagement with the Genes and Health study, which is undertaking genomic research with the British Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities to improve health outcomes especially for diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

The current programme of research will be available to view within our Events page, by searching ‘Research’. The GMSA research committee has members from across the whole of the Northwest representing a range of clinical specialties including cancer, cardiology, mental health, primary care, and infectious diseases. There is patient involvement and input from different health professions including nursing, pharmacy, digital health, and basic science. Please contact us if you wish to find out more.
