Genomics – an education event focusing on ethics, consent and communication

Event Description

Supporting ethical and effective application of genomic medicine in adult intellectual disability services across the North West.

We are pleased to invite healthcare professionals across the North West to a short, in-person learning series focused on the practical, ethical, and communication challenges surrounding genomic medicine in adults with intellectual disability (ID).

Each individual event, in Manchester, Preston and Warrington will cover the same topics, so simply choose the most convenient location..

As genomic medicine continues to expand across the NHS, many professionals—whether in psychiatry, primary care, acute services, or community teams—are increasingly encountering genomic questions in routine clinical work.

This series, facilitated by colleagues from Clinical Genetics and Learning Disability Psychiatry, aims to equip the workforce with the knowledge and tools needed to support safe, thoughtful, and person-centred practice.

Who should attend?

Healthcare professionals (including trainees) working with adults with intellectual disability in the North West. The content will be relevant to a wide range of disciplines, reflecting the growing role of genomics across the healthcare system.

Aims of the series

Strengthen regional networks that support the appropriate uptake of genomic medicine for adults with ID.

Provide a safe, reflective space to discuss challenges, evolving practice, and ethical considerations in genomic decision-making.

Increase clinicians’ confidence in initiating discussions about genetic testing, supporting patients through consent processes, and feeding back results with clarity and sensitivity.

Key topics for discussion

Across the three sessions, presenters will explore a wide range of real-world genomic issues encountered in adult ID services, including:-ethical considerations for genetic testing for adults with ID-how to have conversations about genetics-communication tips for talking about genetic results.
