To help facilitate the mainstreaming of genomics into everyday healthcare, the National Genomics Education programme has once again expanded its flagship educational resource GeNotes to include a brand-new pharmacogenomics collection, which joins existing specialties such as paediatrics and endocrinology. GeNotes (genomic notes for clinicians) is a vital resource, designed to support healthcare professionals in making the right genomics decisions, at each stage of a clinical pathway. It provides educational information that can be accessed, for example, during patient consultations, along with links to bite-sized further learning.

The web-based resource has been designed to support clinicians in accessing genomic testing for their patients. In the context of healthcare, genomics is the study of a person’s genetic material to achieve a diagnosis or inform treatment and management.

Genomic testing is being used in the NHS for cancer and rare and infectious diseases and can lead to answers for patients where previously there were none. From a pharmacogenomics perspective, we expect to see the availability of testing grow significantly in the coming years. As the testing landscape develops, so will these resources.

So whether you’re sitting with a patient in the clinic or you're reflecting on a tricky case, GeNotes is here to help.

If professionals are looking for somewhere to start, why not begin with the "Introduction to Pharmacogenetics" https://genomicseducation.hee.nhs.uk/genotes/knowledge-hub/introduction-to-pharmacogenomics/…

The In the Clinic section provides short clinical scenarios designed to give clinicians the information they need quickly before or during a patient appointment.  For example, a patient has presented with PGx data, but testing may not be currently available on the NHS, e.g., a patient with known SLCO1B1 genotype requiring statin therapy. https://genomicseducation.hee.nhs.uk/genotes/in-the-clinic/results-patient-with-known-slco1b1-genotype-requiring-statin-therapy/… or a patient requiring fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy requiring DPYD testing. https://genomicseducation.hee.nhs.uk/genotes/in-the-clinic/presentation-patient-requiring-fluoropyrimidine-based-chemotherapy/…

The Knowledge Hub is an encyclopedia of further learning resources designed to develop clinicians’ understanding of genomics in medicine.
